چکیده

Given a connected, undirected distance graph with required classes of nodes and optional Steiner nodes, nd a shortest tree containing at least one node of each required class. This problem called Class Steiner Tree is NP-hard and therefore we are dependent on approximation. In this paper, we investigate various restrictions of the problem comparing their complexities with respect to approximability. A main result is that for an input of trees without Steiner nodes and unit edges only, Class Steiner Tree is as hard to approximate as Minimum Set Cover, for which no constant approximation is known, too. Further we prove that if this restricted version has an approximation scheme, all members of the optimization problem class MAX SNP do.

Lower bounds for the relative greedy algorithm for approximating Steiner trees

The Steiner tree problem is to find a shortest subgraph that spans a given set of vertices in a graph. This problem is known to be NP-hard and it is well known that a polynomial time 2-approximation algorithm exists. In 1996 Zelikovsky [11] suggested an approximation algorithm for the Steiner tree problem that is called the relative greedy algorithm. Till today the performance ratio of this alg...

Solving a tri-objective convergent product network using the Steiner tree

Considering convergent product as an important manufacturing technology for digital products, we integrate functions and sub-functions using a comprehensive fuzzy mathematical optimization process. To form the convergent product, a web-based fuzzy network is considered in which a collection of base functions and sub-functions configure the nodes and each arc in the network is to be a link betwe...

Approximating Buy-at-Bulk k-Steiner trees

In the buy-at-bulk k-Steiner tree (or rent-or-buy k-Steiner tree) problem we are given a graph G(V,E) with a set of terminals T ⊆ V including a particular vertex s called the root, and an integer k ≤ |T |. There are two cost functions on the edges of G, a buy cost b : E −→ R+ and a rent cost r : E −→ R+. The goal is to find a subtree H of G rooted at s with at least k terminals so that the cost ∑

Applications of the Linear Matroid Parity Algorithm to Approximating Steiner Trees

The Steiner tree problem in unweighted graphs requires to find a minimum size connected subgraph containing a given subset of nodes (terminals). In this paper we investigate applications of the linear matroid parity algorithm to the Steiner tree problem for two classes of graphs: where the terminals form a vertex cover and where terminals form a dominating set. As all these problems are MAX-SNP...

How well can Primal - Dual and Local - Ratio algorithms perform ? ∗ Allan

We define an algorithmic paradigm, the stack model, that captures many primal dual and local ratio algorithms for approximating covering and packing problems. The stack model is defined syntactically and without any complexity limitations and hence our approximation bounds are independent of the P vs NP question. Using the stack model, we bound the performance of a broad class of primal dual an...
